A guide to Toronto's best private hospitals
Desmond Brown, National Post
Two-tier health care and whether it actually exists has become one of the hottest topics of the current federal election campaign. The fact is, privately run hospitals and clinics have long existed in Canada. The National Post sent a reporter to tour four of the most exclusive and expensive private medical centres in the Toronto area.
THE COSMETIC SURGERY HOSPITAL, 4650 HIGHWAY 7, WOODBRIDGE
SHOULDICE HOSPITAL 7750 BAYVIEW AVE., THORNHILL.
BELLWOOD HEALTH SERVICES, 1020 MCNICOL AVE., TORONTO.
COSMETIC SURGICENTRE 99 YORKVILLE AVENUE, TORONTO.
Cosmetic Surgicentre is located in a small commercial building in the heart of Yorkville and is owned and operated by Dr. Robert H. Stubbs, 51, a certified plastic surgeon.
Dr. Stubbs has made headlines throughout North America since the early 1990s for the penis-lengthening technique he learned in China from a certain Dr. Long.
Dr. Stubbs says other surgeons have tried to offer the penis-enlarging technique -- which costs about $4,800 at his clinic -- but failed because they were not aware of the intensive follow-up involved.
"You have to hold the man's hand ... and his penis."
There are two operating rooms and a three-bed recovery area in his comfortable 4,000-square-foot clinic.
Most surgery is performed without the use of general anesthesia, and after the procedures the patients take a private elevator to an underground garage where their transportation waits.
His clients represent every socio-economic segment and come from all over the world, he said.
Dr. Stubbs also offers breast and genital work for women, such as labia reduction.
The requests for the types of treatments come in waves, he said, a phenomenon he can't explain.
"All I've seen today is breasts. For some reasons breasts are up and penises are down," he said earlier this week.
